| AKC Obedience Trials Outlined In obedience trials the dog and handler work as a team to perform a set of exercises which the judge scores. The dog's conformation is not a factor and even spayed and neutered dogs may compete. Obedience is divided into three levels, each more difficult than the previous level. Dogs earn titles for each level completed. Novice Level - Title to earn: Companion Dog (CD) Dogs perform six exercises: Heel on Lead Stand for examination Heel Free Recall Long Sit Long Down
Open Level - Title to earn: Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) Dogs perform seven exercises: Heel Free Drop on Recall Retrieve on Flat Retrieve over the High Jump Broad Jump Long Sit Long Down
Utility Level - Title to earn: Utility Dog (UD) Dogs perform five exercises: A Signal Exercise Two Scent-discrimination Tests Directed Retrieve Directed Jumping Group Examination
Dogs must earn three "legs" to earn an obedience title. One "leg" is equal to a score of 170 points out of a possible 200 and earn more than 50% on each exercise.
